Cannes Regatta Royale & Les Voiles de Saint Tropez
Cannes Regatta Royal
Tuesday, September 26th – Saturday, September 30th, 2017
As much as we may wish it to stay away, winter is slowly creeping back into the lives of those of us here in the Northern Hemisphere. While chillier nights tend to make us think of putting our boats to rest for the season, some yachtsmen prefer to send the summer racing season out with a bang! Nowhere is this more evident right now than the French Riviera, where the Cannes Regatta Royale and Les Voiles De Saint-Tropez mark a historic end to racing in the turquoise waters of the Southern France.
Scheduled for the last golden days of September, the Cannes Regatta Royale is the summation of the Mediterranean Panerai Classic Yacht Challenge and it will define the fortunes of S&S Classic Racing teams who have been chasing an overall victory for the whole season. S&S teams have littered the podium in this series for the whole of 2017, and hopes are high for the grand finale. Racing in coastal courses off of historic Cannes Harbor, the fleet has so far experienced light breezes which are easily made up for by the sunny skies and quaint anchorages which serve only to show off the nuanced beauty of these designs. With 3 races completed and 1 to come as of this writing, 4 S&S boats were locked into a battle just 5 points apart. Good luck to teams finishing up this iconic regatta!
Les Voiles de Saint-Tropez
Saturday, September 30th – Sunday, October 8th, 2017
Then from October 3rd to 7th, the harborfront of Saint-Tropez sets the backdrop for the annual farewell to classic sailing. Much like the colorful beauties moored to the stone quay; the shops, homes, and streets on the basin of this French enclave have held the same vibrant character for decades, preserving the essence of a more relaxed time. Racing along the coast of France in the fall usually provides the strongest breezes of the season and a chance for these thoroughbreds to stretch their legs. Prewar Sparkman & Stephens legends like STORMY WEATHER, SKYLARK, and BLITZEN will be looking to make a statement here as to who is the true king of the Med. In keeping with the celebratory mood of the regatta, there are carnivals, parties, fireworks, music and dancing to be had on shore for crews, locals, and owners alike in order to make lasting memories for the long months until racing returns.
And while racing in the Med may be coming to an end for the year, this is most certainly not the end for S&S in 2017! Our Naval Architects are continuously working with teams to help them rebuild, refit, and optimize their boats for classic racing both in Europe and America. The winter is a perfect time to hatch new plans for your boat, or follow through on a project you’ve always wanted to do. Please reach out if you’re curious about racing your S&S Classic or if you’re already racing and would like to see about making 2018 your best season yet!!
