Kicking off the Newport, R.I. sailing season this weekend is the NYYC Annual Regatta. Featuring competition in classes ranging from Classics to Grand Prixs to Metre Boats, this perennial pilgrimage of New England yachts is always a wonderful time.
A new twist on an old event, Metrefest will be run in conjunction with the 163rd New York Yacht Club Annual Regatta at their on-the-water clubhouse in Newport Rhode Island. With the 12 Meter Worlds coming up in 2019 and the 6 Meter Worlds being hosted in the U.S. in 2017, event organizers thought it would be fun to bring all of the various Metre fleets together for a bit of a celebration. The end result is over 32 Metre boats ranging from 2.4s to 12s preparing to do battle in Narragansett Bay this weekend. Notable amongst this fleet are the 3 Sparkman & Stephens 12 Metres in the Modern Division – Courageous, Intrepid, and Freedom – sporting a combined 5 America’s Cup wins between them and racing against each other for the first time in 8 years.
On the Classics Racing circle there will be much to talk about as well. S&S designed NY32 ISLA and 48 foot sloop ODYSSEY will be worth watching as will the other boats from houses such as Herreshoff and Luders.
S&S designers and brokers will be racing in and attending the regatta. Please reach out to get in touch, ask a question, or just say hello! We’ll see you in Newport!
