The renowned design firm of Sparkman & Stephens has collaborated with Queenship Marine Industries of Maple Ridge, B.C., to produce a new production cruising yacht called the Passagemaker 60.

Taking cues from the growing segment of the market that desires safe, reliable, fuel-efficient cruising yachts comfortable to live aboard and capable of crossing oceans, S & S has created for Queenship an exceptionally well-found, full-displacement cruiser that evokes the style of the larger motoryachts of the mid-20th century. The yacht cannot be compared to current offerings in the size range with elegant and purposeful touches like the graceful canoe stern, Portuguese brow, funnel and robust teak rail caps throughout.

"We've created in a smaller package a boat that has the look and feel of a much larger yacht, but that doesn't require a crew," says Greg Matzat, chief naval architect at S & S.

The three-stateroom Passagemaker 60 is available in two basic versions. The standard layout features side decks port and starboard and full walk-around access. The widebody has an expanded salon and galley and side decks on starboard only. Each version has extensive cruising amenities including a spacious master stateroom with head, a large VIP stateroom and a guest stateroom, each with separate access to the guest head. Some custom interior arrangements are available. The yacht will be delivered with an extensive standard specification.

"We've addressed with Queenship the lifestyle needs of their prospective clients for this boat and we've designed her for maximum luxury and cruising comfort," says Matzat. Unique is the integral swim platform, which extends the waterline length for improved displacement speed and which provides access to the sea yet maintains the elegant canoe stern above. "Below the waterline the transom is conventional. This eliminates any tendency for the stern to squat at speed, as found on vessels with a traditional canoe stern."

The Passagemaker sports a spacious, comfortable wheelhouse with a pilot berth, two adjustable helm chairs, a flat panel control console, halogen lighting with red lenses and a Portuguese bridge. Tall bulwarks, four watertight compartments and a model-tested hull shape optimized for minimum resistance and maximum roll-dampening will provide owners and guests significant security and peace of mind in rough weather. A skeg protects the running gear. Stabilizers are standard equipment as are bow and stern thrusters.

S & S has created an exceptionally well-appointed, low-profile galley tailored for maximum functionality and live aboard luxury. The yacht's salon is has no equal in her class with ornate overhead beams, halogen overhead lighting, a varnished, starburst-pattern dining table on a high/low adjustable stainless steel pedestal, a TV cabinet with pop-up lift and a teak and holly sole.

The luxurious covered aft deck is equipped with port and starboard settees, teak coffee tables, stereo speakers, salt and freshwater wash down and a pantograph access door to the swim platform. Her upper aft deck has ample space for a tender and water bikes. Her central stack features a concealed barbeque grill that vents into the stack. The flying bridge is equipped with dining settee, wet bard, steering station with engine gauges and bow and stern thruster controls.

The yacht's single Lugger L1276A2 diesel produces a continuous rating of 340 horsepower at 1800 rpm. Her maximum speed will be 10.5 knots. With fuel capacity of 2,400 gallons, she has a range is excess of 3,000 nm at 9.5 knots and approximately 5,000 nm at 8 knots. For those concerned about making port in the event of a mechanical failure, S & S has designed the Passagemaker 60 with a backup propulsion system called a BAT (Bayview Auxiliary Tug) Drive from Bayview Edison Industries. The BAT Drive is a hydraulic engine connected to the shaft by a belt and driven off the generators' power take off unit. Her electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems are designed tough for true, remote live aboard duty.

The Passagemaker 60's construction is FRP with a solid bottom and cored topsides, deck and superstructure. Utmost concern over easy operation and safety guided the Passagemaker's design. In fact with five water tight compartments, 10 paired and independently alarmed bilge pumps, fire and bilge panels in the wheelhouse, master stateroom and flybridge, and automatic fuel and damper shut downs, she may very well be the safest boat in her class.

Hull number one of the 60 is in the early stages of production. It is slated for delivery to an American owner in mid-2007. The owner plans to live aboard part of the year and cruise from Alaska to the southeastern U.S. coast. S & S is working on designs for larger models which include 75' and 87'versions that will expand the line.

"We chose S & S for this design for the firm's incredible reputation and pedigree and its technical expertise," says Queenship's Dan Fritz. "We expect this yacht to be the start of a long, productive relationship that will extend to other projects."
